Sizewell C female engineers hold event to inspire the next generation

Leading female engineers from the Sizewell C project are meeting local young females next week to mark International Women in Engineering Day (23/6) which this year celebrates Engineering Heroes.
The online class is being run in partnership with Speakers for Schools, a charitable organisation that puts schools in touch with business leaders to gain insight into the world of work.
This session is part of the work Sizewell C is doing to tackle diversity and inclusion in the work force and an important way to make the connection from school subjects to the world of work.
Fifty local students including a class from Holbrook Academy in Ipswich will attend the session and meet with a number of Sizewell C female engineers to hear their career journeys and ask questions to help with their own development. They will also meet with female VR engineers who helped to create the computer-generated images of Sizewell C.
Dr Syinyi Phoon, a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers is working on the Sizewell C project and will be speaking with local students on International Women in Engineering Day:
Dr Syinyi said: “We know that seeing is believing that’s why I am more than happy to share my wide ranging engineering experience gained through many nationally significant infrastructure projects. I started out after completing a PhD researching the effects of climate change which has now led me to work on Sizewell C which can help tackle the climate crisis. I have always found this an incredibly rewarding career.”
Proposals for Sizewell C are currently being examined by the Planning Inspectorate. If Sizewell C receives planning permission it will create jobs for 7,800 people at peak construction and then offer 900 rewarding careers likes those enjoyed by Poppy, Jess, Syinyi and Emma – as well as saving 9million tonnes of Co2 every year of operation.

Poppy Able, Sizewell B Graduate Apprentice
Poppy is a degree apprentice in the Sizewell B Engineering department, where she is training to become a system engineer – looking after specific systems in terms of maintenance, amongst other areas. Poppy went to Thomas Mills High School in Framlingham, and then stayed there for sixth form too. Poppy gave a filmed virtual tour of Sizewell B during the pandemic so students in the area get to see inside the station where she works.
Jessica Cliff, Sizewell C and Hinkley Point C Nuclear Engineer
I’ve worked as a Nuclear Engineer for EDF (UK) since graduating from the University of Birmingham with MSci Physics in 2017. My current role is HPC and SZC Criticality Topic Lead based in our central technical office in Gloucester. Criticality Safety is about making sure that the fuel remains safe when it’s being handled and stored outside of the reactor. My role specifically is to make sure that we have all the analysis we need to allow HPC and SZC to receive fuel on site as well as performing some of the analysis myself. Jessica says: “I really enjoy working in the nuclear industry applying physics to projects that will help us tackle climate change and I hope to encourage others to join our industry.”
Emma Goodson, Sizewell C Lead Engineer
Dr Syinyi Phoon CEng FICE FIKE MAPM
Syinyi Phoon is a Programme Manager who has delivered many strategic initiatives within Major Projects. Syinyi’s background is in engineering with specialism in water, trend forecasting, data analytics and innovation. She is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, a Fellow Member of the Institute of Innovation and Knowledge Exchange, a full member of the Association of Project Management and a member of the British Hydrological Society.
Projects that Syinyi has worked on prior to Sizewell C include Houses of Parliament Restoration & Renewal, Thames Tideway ‘super-sewer’ tunnel, Crossrail, and supported many designs of roads, ports & harbours, on/offshore windfarm, quarry, landfill, flood alleviation, coastal protection and housing development.
Emma Goodson
Emma is a Chartered Engineer and a member of the Nuclear Institute, and Institute of Chartered Managers. She is an Engineering and Project manager within the pre-Civils Works Alliance for Sizewell C. She has worked in a broad range of disciplines in the Nuclear Industry over the last 19 years and has seen an operating site through its transition into defueling then decommissioning before starting her engineering role with new nuclear build. Emma says: “I am passionate about the Nuclear Industry and have enjoyed a variety of engineering roles over the years and enjoy sharing my experience with those starting out on their career journey.”
