Sizewell C is Britain’s latest Net-Zero megaproject.

It will be a 3.2-gigawatt power station, providing decades of clean, reliable electricity from nuclear energy for 6 million homes.

 

 

 

 

Project Milestones

A look back at the project’s progress and important moments.

1. October 2012
First of four rounds of local consultation begins

Our consultations in the region led to engagement with more than 10,000 people and organisations.

2. May 2020
Application for planning permission submitted

Our application for a Development Consent Order (DCO) was more than 50,000 pages long.

3. January 2022
Government invests £100m

The UK Government agreed a land option agreement with EDF to fund further development of the project.

4. March 2022
New nuclear funding legislation passed

MPs vote overwhelmingly in favour of legislation to introduce Regulated Asset Base (RAB) funding for nuclear.

5. July 2022
Development Consent Order approved

Approval of the DCO comes after the Planning Inspectorate says the benefits of the project “strongly outweigh the impacts”.

6. December 2022
Government invests nearly £700m

The Government agrees to invest in the project becoming a 50% shareholder alongside EDF.

7. March 2023
Environment permits granted

The Environment Agency grants permits which are required before construction can begin.

Whether it’s through our community arts programme, our £23m community fund or our many other initiatives, Sizewell C is already bringing transformational and positive change to the East of England.

There is strong local support for Sizewell C because we always have and always will put community and sustainability at the heart of what we do.

Local Community

Our strongest asset is our people and at Sizewell C, we invest in their potential.

Together with our education partners and charities, we’re already helping school-leavers, people looking to switch careers, those currently out of work, and many others develop the skills they need to work with us.

Our project will support 70,000 jobs during construction. We’ll need a big team from our local community and across the UK to get the power station built and operating.

At Sizewell C, we’re not just building a nuclear power station; we’re also creating stunning nature reserves around our site for wildlife to thrive in. This is to mitigate the impacts of constructing Sizewell C.

Nuclear and nature have coexisted around the nuclear power stations in East Suffolk for decades. Our environmental plans will take these efforts further, eventually resulting in more local biodiversity, more nature recovery and more rewilding on our site and beyond.
